General Information
The methodology of teaching a foreign language in an intensive
course is completely different than the one used during a whole term or
school year. NEOHEL creates its programs on principles that focus on the
development of language skills related to speaking, understanding of the
first language speakers, contact with current affairs and cultural events,
and organization of morphology of the Greek language. During the seminar we
try to create a friendly climate between the students and the teaching
staff, and we hope that all the participants to the seminar stay in touch
both personally and professionally

EU may follow steps 1 to 5 in order to obtain funding from one of the

- Find application for funding from the representatives of the
SOCRATES – Comenius / Grundtvig programmes in
your country of residence. Representatives in Member States are listed in: http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/socrates/nat-est_en.html (ATTENTION: there is an underscore between “est” and “en.html”)
- In order for the application to be valid NEOHEL has to provide you with
a certificate of acceptance for the seminar. The latter must be attached to
your application. Responsible for the seminars is Ms.

- Afterwards, you submit your application with the above certificate
to your local SOCRATES representative for approval.
- When your application is approved, you inform accordingly NEOHEL
and you fill out the application form of NEOHEL that you send by fax or
e-mail. You will be notified in regard to the 200 Euros deposit in order to
confirm participation to the seminar.

Aegina (http://www.aegina.com.gr )
The island of Aegina is an ideal location for vacation and studying, and
specifically the area of Apollo’s Column, where “Nafsika”
is located. The nearby picturesque taverns offer good quality food (fresh
fish, traditional octopus) in very competitive prices. The Town of Aegina has a long promenade with patisseries with
local sweets, such as loukoumades and nut
caramels (Aegina is a unique origin
producer of nuts recognized as such by the EU). The Town has to offer 4
open air movie theaters that often show movies
for children (all subtitled). The Aphaea Athena
temple not far of the Town is one of the most important archaeological
must-see sites in the island, as well as a number of neo-classical
buildings, Byzantine churches, the monastery of
Saint Nektarios and traditional
villages.

Hotel ( http://www.hotelnafsika.com )
The seminar will take place in the very relaxing environment of the
3-star hotel “Nafsika” in Aegina. The hotel is at
a 10-minute walking distance from the Town and the port of Aegina.
It has been built on an area with archaeological significance, where now is
located one of the best beaches of the island. The beach is at a 5-minute
walking distance.
George Seferis and Odysseas
Elytis, both Nobel laureates of literature, spend several summers in “Nafsika”, a proto-Mediterranean style building with
Byzantine and neo-Greek elements.
The rooms have verandas overlooking the sea and Epidaurus as well as private bath, TV,
AC, and refrigerator. The private library of the owner, Mr.
Poulakos, includes 40,000 volumes in Greek,
English, French, and Italian on ethnology, history, politics, and
literature, as well as a number of dictionaries and encyclopedias.
When the weather is favorable, the seminar takes
place outside in the verandas of the hotel with the magnificent sea views.
4 LEVELS OF COMPETENCY
001. BASIC 1
The 1st level develops basic language skills
that will allow students to understand and communicate in Greek in basic
situations in which simple and immediate exchange of ideas is required.
The beginners and those with a minimal understanding
of the language will be able, at the end of the two week seminar, to master
a 500-word vocabulary in order to use approximately 50 communicative acts.
At the same time they will develop their reading writing skills due to the
interactive method of teaching which are based on images, pictures
dialogues, and multimedia material. Music, references to the Greek
civilization, traditions, and modern way of living will be
used to develop the above skills.
Students are constantly prompted and encouraged
to speak and exchange ideas on basic topics. By the end of the seminar,
students will be familiar with the basic grammatical and syntactical issues
that may facilitate their basic communication.
002. BASIC 2
The 2nd level develops language skills that will
allow students to understand and communicate in Greek in situations in
which not only simple and immediate exchange of ideas is required, but also
expression of some personal ideas.
At this level, students will develop their
skills in regard to communicative acts that cover a wider range of topics
and interests as well as their reading and writing skills due to the
interactive method of teaching which is based on images, pictures
dialogues, and multimedia material. In particular, the use of video will prompt
students to understand and speak the language. The vocabulary targeted for
this level comprises 500-600 words and 60 additional communicative acts,
such as descriptions, everyday life situations, giving directions, the
human body, etc.
At this level short authentic but edited texts
from literature and press cuttings, as well as Greek songs will be used to
complement the teaching material.
003. INTERMEDIATE 3
At this level, students will develop language
skills that will allow them to understand and communicate in spoken and
written Greek with accuracy and to be able to use the appropriate
expressions in more demanding and complex situations.
At this level, the vocabulary development of the
basic thematic units is completed, and abstract topics and terms will be
introduced. New sophisticated idiomatic expressions will be added expanding
the language knowledge to reach the linguistic variety of the Greek
language. In addition, students will be acquainted with the proper use and
meaning of phrasal verbs and other grammatical forms that allow them to
further explore the Greek language.
In this stage, students obtain a level of
language knowledge beyond basic understanding and expression and are able
to deal with more complex linguistic material. Emphasis is put on the
speaking skills. For this reason, TV programs, edited Greek movies, and
other videotaped authentic material will complement the teaching material
of the intermediate level.
004. ADVANCED 4
At this level, students must develop language
skills that will allow them to speak and write with high level of accuracy,
to compose complicated phrases, and to respond naturally not only to known
topics, but also to completely new situations and areas of expertise.
At this level, students who participate must
have the ability to respond to this kind of material, to be able to follow
with ease TV programs, to read and understand the majority of newspaper
contents, to read and understand Greek literature, to use idioms and
complex syntactical forms. The students entering this level will be lacking
some of the elements that will, after the completion of the seminar, render
them more fluent in Greek.

A course can be cancelled if there are not
enough participants.

During the period of the seminar the students
will have the option to follow Greek dance lessons.
Ancient Theater
of Epidaurus
Excursion by boat and bus may be arranged to the ancient theater of Epidaurus. Performances are taking place
every summer in Epidaurus
on a daily basis.
Archaeological guided tour
(free):
Visit of the Temple of Aphaea Athena, the ruins of the Apollo temple, the archaeological
museum, the
Medieval town of Paliachora, the Orthodox Monastery of St.Nektarios.
The temple of Aphaea Athena in Aegina is one of the best preserved Doric style
temples of the 5th century BC. The temple has been used as prototype for
the construction of the Parthenon in Athens
and along with the temple of Poseidon in Sounion
they create a holy triangle (Aegina – Athens
– Sounion).
Visit of the Museum of Sculptor C. Kapralos
Christos Kapralos’ wife will guide us
through his significant work in the museum. Works by Henri Moore and
Christos Kapralos had been exposed during the
Olympic Games of 2004 in Athens.
About The Teaching Staff
All teaching staff speaks Greek as their first language, have post
graduate degrees in Second Language Education, and have long experience in
teaching Greek to foreigners:
Ms. Evangelia
Georgantzi, MA in Second Language
Education and Linguistics, has long experience in creating series of books
on Greek as a second/foreign language for children and adults, and has
coordinated various SOCRATES – LINGUA programs for the production of
teaching material for the Greek language.
Dr. Christos Papazoglou,
Professor in the Department of Greek Language and Literature of INALCO (Institut National des Langues
et Civilisations Orientales) of the University of Paris, is responsible for studies
regarding the work of poets such as Kariotakis, Seferis, Solomou, and Cavafi.
Ms. Persefoni
Popovits, Assistant Professor of
the Greek Language and Literature at the University of Belgrade,
translated various literary works.
Ms. Eleana
Raftopoulou, Graduate in
Literature and Languages, translated various literary works, experienced in
teaching Greek as a foreign language to adults and children.
Ms. Lina Vaska–Paidoussis,
Lawyer, MA in Second Language Education, experienced in teaching Greek as a
second/foreign language to children and adults.
