General
NEOHEL is a publishing house founded in 1967 and operates under the current
name since 1992. In summary, the activities of NEOHEL are the following:
- Research in the field of applied linguistics with
respect to Greek as a foreign language
- Education of students of Greek as a foreign language
- Training of teachers of Greek as a foreign language
- Publication of new educational material for teaching
Greek and improvement of existing material
- Participation in European programmes with the objective of
disseminating and promoting the Greek language internationally.
Objectives
and activities
NEOHEL carries out
research programmes on teaching Greek as a foreign language, in cooperation
with universities and schools abroad (England, France, Spain, Bulgaria,
Serbia and Cyprus).
NEOHEL participates in
European Commission SOCRATES-Lingua 2 programmes as coordinator for the
production of educational material on learning Greek as a foreign language.
For this purpose, NEOHEL has collaborated with the following:
1.
The
department of Modern Greek Language and Literature of INALCO (Institut
National de Langues et Civilisations Orientals of the University of Paris
France.
2.
The
Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies of the University of
Birmingham,
3.
The
Department of Modern Greek Language and Literature of the University of
Complutence in Madrid, and
4.
The
Department of Modern Greek Language and Literature of the Universities of
Sofia and Belgrade.
Since 1995, NEOHEL
participates as coordinator in the European Commission programmes SOCRATES
- LINGUA aiming at promoting the least -spoken EU languages. NEOHEL has
published 77 titles of books, CD's and audiocassettes of Greek as a foreign
language, and as such it remains in close contact and collaborates with
training institutions all over the world in regard to training and cultural
issues.

NEOHEL organises:
Training seminars for
teachers of Greek as a foreign language funded by the SOCRATES programme.
The participants of the seminars are eligible for grant by the COMENIUS 2
and GRUNDTVIG 3 programmes.

and abroad for educators other than the ones eligible for grants
Until now, NEOHEL has
trained educators in USA, the UK, Bulgaria, Serbia, Cyprus etc.
- Intensive
Summer Greek Language and Literature Courses
NEOHEL has organised
intensive Greek Language and Literature courses for adults on various
islands and areas in Greece, Santorini, Ithaka, Thasos, Kavala, Pylos and
Athens. Please consult the Seminars section of the web for information on
this year’s courses.

Academic winter Greek culture
programs in Greece.(For adults)
Since 2007 NEOHEL
organises 3-one week programs in Athens ( languages of tuition : Greek, English.
Spanish ) aiming to the promotion of the Greek culture to EU citizens and
especially EU teachers. The participants of the seminars are eligible for
grant by the COMENIUS and GRUNDTVIG programmes.
Trough lectures about Greek art,
Literature, History and Popular
culture by Academic Professors, excursions and visits to ancient and modern
sites, this program combines learning and leisure without compromising
quality and value. Our objective is to give to the participants the
opportunity to see, live, learn Greece and its people and
discover its cultural heritage.

University program for students
Since 2006 NEOHEL in collaboration with the North Park University of Chicago, organises an intensive 4-credits summer course in Greece named Academic Odyssey to Greece by incorporating both
scholarly/didactic approaches to learning with experiential approaches
based on the rich resources of the country of Greece.
Trough excursions and
visits to ancient and modern sites, students have the opportunity to
incorporate the classical ideals and the concept of Kallos to current educational themes and subjects. In addition
students explore the rich artistic and cultural heritage and language of Greece, its
archaeological, historical and ethnographic character and also learn about
a country rich with culture, traditions and warm and friendly inhabitants.

A Greek language and Culture
program for schools
NEOHEL organizes in Aegina a special summer program for schools, the
program Asterias travels.
This program was
created following several parents’ suggestion who desired their children to
be familiar with their heritage language and culture.
Children have the
opportunity to experience a unique Greek summer and at the same time they
improve their Greek and their knowledge of the Greek history in reference
to the historical elements that are present on the island of Aegina.
This program is addressed
equally to people who wish to learn Greek and admire the language and
civilization. All participating children must be accompanied by a parent or
an adult responsible for them. Accompanying adults may benefit as well by
participating in separate seminars of various levels. That way they can
improve their Greek at the same time as the children
- Family
Vacations + Greek Language and Culture
This program was
created following several parents’ suggestion who desired their children to

- Dissemination
and Support for the Greek Language
One of the objectives
of NEOHEL is to disseminate and support teaching of the Greek language
abroad. For this reason, NEOHEL supports financially the Greek language
programmes of two schools in Belgrade, Serbia and in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Every year, NEOHEL
offers scholarships to foreign students and teachers of the Greek language
in order to participate to the above seminars and courses. Until now,
scholarships have been offered to teachers and students from Serbia,
Bulgaria and Uzbekistan.
About the Teaching Staff
All teaching staff speaks Greek as their first language, have post graduate
degrees in Second Language Education, and have long experience in teaching
Greek to foreigners:
Ms. Evangelia
Georgantzi, MA in Second Language Education and
Linguistics, has long experience in creating series of books on Greek as a
second/foreign language for children and adults, and has coordinated
various SOCRATES – LINGUA programs for the production of teaching material
for the Greek language.
Dr. Christos
Papazoglou, Professor in the Department of Greek Language
and Literature of INALCO (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations
Orientales) of the University of Paris, is responsible for studies
regarding the work of poets such as Kariotakis, Seferis, Solomou, and
Cavafi.
Ms. Persefoni
Popovits, Assistant Professor of the Greek Language and
Literature at the University of Belgrade, translated various literary
works.
Ms. Eleana
Raftopoulou, Graduate in Literature and Languages,
translated various literary works. Experienced in teaching Greek as a
second/foreign language to children and adults.
Ms. Lina
Vaska–Paidoussis, Lawyer, MA in Second Language Education,
experienced in teaching Greek as a second/foreign language to children and
adults of various competency levels.
